Google Real-Time Feature Boosts Twitter Traffic
Data from ComScore and Hitwise suggests that the launch of Googles real-time search has given Twitter a significant boost in web traffic.
The deal between the two companies appears to have given Twitter a novel form of search engine marketing, boosting its number of unique visitors by 9% since real-time search was launched. ComScore reports that when real-time search was launched in December 2009, unique visitors were up 3.1%, indicating that January 2010s all-time high of 21.79 million unique Twitter visitors was due to the new Google feature.
Experian Hitwise seems to confirm this theory. Their data suggests that Google is the main source of the additional Twitter traffic over this period; traffic from Google referrals increased by 9% comparing the week ending December 5 to the week ending February 13.
Googles introduction of real-time search and its heavy incorporation of Twitter results was closely observed by the SEO and SEM community. The relationship between the two companies has become more complicated recently, as Google launched Buzz last week after paying $15m for access to Twitters firehose/data feed. Buzz allows users to connect to the Twitter network, integrating it into Googles own attempt at social networking.
