Local Stars Shine At Meona Awards Night

Each year, Newport News resident and live music connoisseur Steven Sloop hands out his MEONA awards to worthy players and singers. Some awards are voted on. Others, Sloop chooses based on his own observations.
Mostly, it’s a chance for Sloop to honor and encourage the musicians who he’s enjoyed over the past 12 months.
On Tuesday (March 9) at Goodfellas in Hampton, Sloop used the club’s popular weekly open-mike night as a chance to handed out many of the awards. Joe Maniscalco, Charles Darden, Paul Warren, Bobby “Black Hat” Walters, and the band Phoebus Rio were among the musicians on hand to accept honors.

“I’d like to thank all of my fans — all two of them,” Darden said, cracking a joke as he accepted his two awards for jazz artist and jazz band. Darden recently released a sparkling new CD of vocal jazz, “Coming Back to Me.”
Later in the evening, Phoebus Rio took the stage and kept the crowd’s toes tapping with tunes including “Down at the Twist and Shout.”
