Matt Cutts, Googles software engineer, says that implementing 301 redirects can affect search engine optimization (SEO).

In a recent conversation with Eric Enge of Stone Temple Consulting, Cutts said that 301 redirects can result in loss of PageRank.

While this has been an observation of experts for a long time, this is only the first time that Google confirmed the effects of 301 links.

Cutts advised SEO executives not to indulge in PageRank sculpting. He said that the focus should be improving site architecture.

If you can get site architecture straight first, then youll have less to do, or no need to even think about PageRank sculpting, explained Cutts.
