Optimising Meta Tags

There was once in the time of SEO when the use of meta tags were the most effective SEO strategy, however, because of abuses search engines deemed it necessary to lessen the importance of the meta tags in search engine optimisation. This does not mean though that the use of meta tags are now ineffective but instead with the proper use and optimisation strategy this may define a website as the optimisation of meta tags may contribute to the increase of a websites ranking.

The meta tag can have several forms the most important and SEO related form is the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag. The former pertains to containing the description of the website or web page as a whole. Site description is important because of the fact that it is an avenue for site indexing as the statements that are incorporated in the meta tag description may also be indexed by search engines. The main characteristic of a meta description tag is that it should be informative, this means that the text contained within must be pertaining or relevant to the web page or the website. It should give the users information about the website or web page and not just a combination of keywords.

The Meta Keywords tag on the other hand is responsible for containing the different keywords that are used in the web page or the website as a whole. The Meta Keywords Tag may not be the most important SEO strategy but it keeps search engines informed about the different keywords that are present in the web page or the website as a whole.

Using the meta description and the meta keywords tag is considered to be of little value in any search engine optimisation efforts, however this does not mean that one should by pass or do away with the said strategy or the addition of these meta tags. In the field of SEO every little value counts especially that the competition is becoming even more challenging.
