Yikes! Google Makes Changes That Affect Long Tail Traffic!

Earlier this week, Google confirmed that its latest algorithm change will affect long tail traffic.

According to Googles Matt Cutts, in a video posted to YouTube back in April of this year, the search engine giant made between 350-550 changes to its algorithms in 2009, so much of the time we would probably be stressing unnecessarily over every little change that came along.

However, this particular change in the Google search algorithm is significant enough that ecommerce entrepreneurs should sit up and take notice!

On May 30th, Matt Cutts from Google posted a new video to YouTube that answers some questions about what the folks at Webmaster World have dubbed Mayday.

In the video, Matt Cutts says: its an algorithmic change that changes how we assess which sites are the best match for long tail queries.

In a nutshell, he says that if your website has been affected by the Mayday change, you should take a look at the quality of your website to determine if it is truly the most relevant match for long tail search queries.

He also suggests that you see what great content you could add to your site, and evaluate your site to see if it could be considered an authority.

He recommends making sure that your web pages do more than just match keywords in a particular query, and that they should be relevant, as well.

This change in Google algorithms is especially important because it will impact SEO for long tail search queries.

If your website has a lot of pages that are not maximized for content, relevance, links to the pages, and other factors, you should set about fixing things as soon as possible, as this new change can directly affect your rankings in Google search, and hence; traffic to your website.

The former Florence resident who now lives in the trendy Atlanta suburb of Duluth, took down sentimental favorite Tom Watson at Turnberry in a four-hole playoff to win his first major golf championship.

The win and the way he did it by making a birdie on the final hole of regulation and then watching Watson bogey the same hole to forge a playoff was the highlight of another solid season for the PGA Tour veteran.

The first native Alabamian to win the British Open, Cink, the 2009 Alabama Sportswriters Association’s Professional Athlete of the year, said it was not a life-changing event.

Sure, he did the Top 10 list on David Letterman’s show and he was part of a two-day celebration in Florence, but otherwise Cink insists he’s the same guy as before.

“It might have been a life-changing event if it had come earlier in my career and I had just burst on the scene,” Cink said. “It probably changed the way I am perceived by the media and fans. Everything has been very positive. I’m having a good career and I don’t have to deal with a lot of stuff the guys at the top have to deal with.”

Cink admits he has more of a recognition factor since he whipped Watson by a record seven shots in the four-hole playoff.

“I might go out and a few more people might see me and say hi,” he said. “That stuff is fun. I enjoy interacting with people. If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be doing Twitter.”

Cink has more than 1.2 million followers on the popular social networking site and has had fun posting pictures of the Claret Jug (the British Open Trophy), among other things, on Twitter.

Cink, who has won six times since joining the tour fulltime in 1997, said the biggest lesson he learned from the win was better time management.

“I needed to learn how to organize my time better at tournaments,” he said. “That became obvious at the PGA. It was my second tournament back after winning the British Open and everybody wanted a little of this and a little of that. I got completely worn out. That became a new goal to organize my time better. I needed to do that anyway.”

Cink said being named professional athlete of the year in Alabama was an honor.

“I’ve always been proud of my ties to Alabama,” he said. “I hear a lot more ‘War Eagle’ and ‘Roll Tide’ than I used to. I guess people are more aware that I am from Alabama. To be named the top pro athlete in the state, I’m proud of that. It means recognition of what I accomplished last year.”

Cink will be honored Sunday at the annual ASWA convention in Birmingham.
