Google Adsense Income Mixed In With Affiliate Advertising And Marketing | Weblog

December 4th, 2010

Are you a webmaster who needs funds to keep your website running? Or is your website the only way for you to earn income? Whichever you are, for as long as you are a webmaster or a web publisher and you need cash, affiliate marketing may work well for you. With affiliate marketing, you may get a lot of cash pouring into your bank account easily. And if your website is rich in great contents and you want to earn more profit, why not get into the Google Adsense program as well?

Why Affiliate Marketing?

Well, simply because affiliate marketing is the easiest and probably the best way to earn profits online, unless otherwise you are a businessman and would rather sell your own products online than advertise other businessmans products on your site. But even online retailers can benefit from affiliate marketing programs, because affiliate marketing actually works for merchants as well as it works for the affiliates.

Affiliate marketing, simply said, is a relationship or agreement made between two websites, with one site being the merchants website and the other being the affiliates site. In the relationship, the affiliate agrees to let the merchant advertise his products on the affiliates site. The merchant, on the other hand, would agree to pay the affiliate in whatever method they have agreed into. This would generally mean easy income for the affiliate, as he would do nothing but place the retailers ad on his site. This would also be very beneficial for the merchant, as getting affiliates to advertise their products would be a lot more affordable than hiring an advertising firm to promote their products.

There are a variety of methods on how the merchant would compensate the affiliate for his services, and for the webmaster, these methods simply translates to the method by which he would earn easy cash. Among the more common methods of compensation are the pay-per-click method, the pay-per-lead method, and the pay-per-sale method. The pay-per-click method is the method most preferred by affiliates, for their sites visitor would only have to visit the advertisers site for them to gain money. The other two methods, on the other hand, are better preferred by merchants, as they would only have to compensate you if your visitor becomes one of their registrants or if the visitor would actually buy their products.

Getting much profit on affiliate marketing programs, however, does not depend so much on the compensation method is it does on the traffic generated by your site. A website that can attract more visitors would generally have the greater chance of profiting in affiliate marketing programs.

What about Google Adsense?

Google Adsense is actually some sort of an affiliate marketing program. In Google Adsense, Google act as the intermediary between the affiliates and the merchants. The merchant, or the advertiser, would simply sign up with Google and provide the latter with text ads pertaining to their products. These ads, which is actually a link to the advertisers website, would then appear on Google searches as well as on the websites owned by the affiliates, or by those webmasters who have signed up with the Google Adsense program.

While one can find a lot of similarities between Google Adsense and other affiliate marketing programs, you can also see a lot of differences. In Google Adsense, all the webmaster has to do is place a code on his website and Google takes care of the rest. The ads that Google would place on your site would generally be relevant to the content of your site. This would be advantageous both for you and for the advertiser, as the visitors of your site would more or less be actually interested with the products being advertised.

The Google Adsense program compensates the affiliate in a pay-per-click basis. The advertisers would pay Google a certain amount each time their ad on your site is clicked and Google would then forward this amount to you through checks, although only after Google have deducted their share of the amount. Google Adsense checks are usually delivered monthly. Also, the Google Adsense program provides webmasters with a tracking tool that allows you to monitor the earnings you actually get from a certain ad.

So, where do all of these lead us to?

Where else but to profits, profits and even more profits! Affiliate marketing programs and the Google Adsense program simply work, whether you are the merchant or the affiliate. For the merchants side, a lot of money can be saved if advertising effort is concentrated on affiliate marketing rather than on dealing with advertising firms. For the webmaster, you can easily gain a lot of profits just by doing what you do best, and that is by creating websites. And if you combine all your profits from both the Google Adsense program and other affiliate marketing programs, it would surely convert to a large amount of cash.

Chapter 9 Affiliate Advertising Because We All Want Friends

December 3rd, 2010

In a Nutshell, Affiliate Marketing is all about Referral

Lets say you recommend a restaurant to your friend. Your friend visits the restaurant and in turn the restaurant makes money all thanks to you! Normally you wouldnt get rewarded for this, one of the most simple and natural forms of marketing called word-of-mouth marketing. However, in some instances it is possible to earn a commission or fee for recommending a product or service; this is known as referral marketing. Referral marketing has worked in the offline world for many years; but it is online that referral marketing has really found a home.

The Internet is a connected place.

People navigate by a series of links, each site referring the user to another site with each person referred to a website being a potential client. As each click can be accurately tracked, it is very easy to reward sites for referring customers. This system of reward where compensation is based on referral is called Affiliate Marketing.

It Takes Two or More to Tango
The basic parties in an affiliate program are:
The Merchant: The individual or company that wants to sell its service or product

The Affiliate: The individual or company that allows their website to be used for the marketing of the merchants product

There can also be more parties in the mix, depending on how big the affiliate program is. Some larger affiliate programs require a lot of work to maintain the relationship between the affiliate and the merchant. In these cases the merchant can hire an experienced company to run their affiliate campaign for them, or they can join an affiliate network.

Affiliate networks help suitable affiliates and merchants to find each other amongst the thousands of affiliate programs on the Internet. In return for this service they usually charge a set up fee, or take commission on sales.

No Referral, No Reward!
The unique aspect of Affiliate Marketing is that affiliates are only rewarded when they make a referral. This is called a pay per performance model of advertising. That means unlike traditional online advertising, with a cost per impression basis, no money is wasted on advertising that doesnt end in a lead or sale.
How the affiliate is paid is decided upon at the initial contract stage and is usually on either a cost per lead (CPL) or cost per acquisition (CPA) basis.

CPL: The affiliate is paid for an inquiry made through their website usually by filling in a form or by sending an email
CPA: The affiliate is paid for a sale made though their website

Most merchants prefer a cost per acquisition basis, as this ensures that the affiliate is paid only when the sale is complete the merchant therefore never loses any money.
Affiliates can also be paid either on a commission basis, where the affiliate earns a percentage of the sale, or on a fixed fee basis.
The merchant can set this payment structure to be the same for all affiliates. However, it is usually in the merchants interest to allow each affiliate to be rewarded differently, depending on their performance. For example:
o1-5 sales = 10% commission of sale
o6-10 sales = 15% commission of sale
o11-15 sales = 20% commission of sale

When the merchant offers incentivised payment schemes the affiliate is likely to be motivated to deliver more sales. More sales benefit both the affiliate and the merchant.

Sounds Good. But Does It Really Work?
Yes it works! One of the first affiliate programs ever created helped Amazon.com to become the giant it is today. Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder of Amazon.com apparently thought up the idea at a cocktail party while talking to a woman who wanted to sell books through her website. It occurred to him that she could refer her website traffic to Amazon.com, and earn a commission on the books her traffic bought. Thus the Amazon Associates program was born in 1996 and is today one of the most popular and successful affiliate programs on the Internet.

Keeping Track
It is very important to track each affiliates activity and their adverts in order to ensure that they are rewarded correctly. This is done with specialized affiliate program software.

The basic data to track includes:
oThe number of impressions (how many times the advert was seen)
oThe number of clicks (how many times the advert was clicked on)
oThe number of conversions (how many times the inquiry/sale was completed)
oThe price of the sale and which product was sold

These statistics should also be used to optimize the affiliates campaign. Some adverts work better on certain sites, depending on the demographics and content of that site. Also, affiliates should keep note of where the advert is placed as placement can affect how often an advert is clicked on.

Although it is the affiliates responsibility to place adverts on their site, it is the merchants responsibility to ensure that the affiliate is aware of any promotional changes and new adverts available for downloading. It is also in the best interest of the merchant to provide the affiliate with tips on how to improve their campaign, as more sales benefit both parties.

Growing and maintaining this relationship with affiliates is very important for the merchant. Regular contact in the form of affiliate-program emails is a common way of keeping the affiliate up-to-date with new promotions and ideas on how to optimize their campaign.

Relevance
As with all advertising, the success of an affiliate campaign is dependent on relevance. The more relevant an affiliate program is to the affiliates audience, the more likely it is to be successful. For example, a site about holidaying in Cape Town might consider joining affiliate programs that advertise accommodation, car hire, day trips, travel insurance or travel guides about Cape Town.

Returns from a relevant and well-managed affiliate campaign can be much higher than any CPM (cost per thousand impressions) online advertising.

Its a Win-Win Situation
The advantages of the affiliate program for the merchant include:
oReaching a larger online audience by advertising on many sites
oFree branding on affiliates websites
oNot paying for advertising unless a lead or sale has occurred

The advantages for the affiliate include:
oEarning regular revenue through their website without having to sell anything themselves
oAccess to advertisements and a tracking system
oAdvice and support on how to run and improve the campaign

So, whether you are a merchant, with a product to sell, or a website owner with an audience to sell to, you can benefit from starting or joining an affiliate program.

The services offered by Quirk eMarketing include everything from the conceptualization of a comprehensive online marketing strategy, through to the implementation of the various tactics, like Affiliate Marketing, needed to make that vision a reality.
