5.0 Backlinks An information guide

Backlinks/Backlinking is one of the most powerful forms of Live Wire Web Marketing.

A backlink is a link from another website leading into yours. Google Spider (crawler) bots travel via linking. The more times a bot lands on your site via backlink from another the more your pagerank is effect.

Why does this matter? The higher the pagerank, the greater value of your website. The greater the value the higher you appear on Google, Yahoo, Bing etc Also this effects the monetry value of your website if you wish to sell it. So, more backlinks = more traffic.

Backlinks are obtained though affiliate link exchanges between other sites. They are also obtained when you post your hyper-link url (your http://) web address, on forums or on a Twitter feed. Another great method to secure backlinks is in articles submissions. There are millions of articles databases out there. You write an article and insert your link at the end. People may or may not even find the articles, let alone read it, but the Spider Bots will. Every link you secure is that much more towards your pagerank. Directory linsting/Indexing is another great method to gain backlinks.

You can backlink from 1,000 smaller, low pagerank websites or if your site is good enough, and has great content you can obtain a backlink from a PR 9 (Pagerank 9) website. When a Pagerank 9 site links to you, your Pagerank is given an SEO boost to a higher ranking. This can be done by emailing a webmaster, commenting on a post, buying advertisement, etc Get creative.

Backlinks require maintance, you may secure 1200 backlinks, have a PR5 site one month and the next you can see a drop to 1000 backlinks and your Pagerank drops, as does your traffic and location on Google and other search engines. This may happen for many reason, your link was removed, the website went down, or the page which hosted your link was pushed to the back of a site.

We see this often, many site have a homepage with a PR9 and the rest of the site is PR1. This is due to bad Intra-site navigation. All pages on a website should link to on another, like a web so that each page may recieve the same PR, the Bots can crawl easy, and People can navigate it better. When a site links pages in a line : Home > News > Archive > 2008 > Technology > March > Article (containing your link) : you have been pushed into the depths of the website and low Pagerank. A proper linking website would have a site map (TBD later) or a link on the homepage to the technology page so that the bots can crawl better and navigation be made easy. Take note of this during your submission process.

No-Follow Links are used by a lot of databses and indexes to thwart off Spamers. You need to stay away from No-Follow Sites. (most will clearly tell you) No-Follow stops the bots and keeps you from getting a backlinks. But you can index your site on a no follow and hope for people to run accross it. It cant hurt, but, they arent the best.

There are also tools which can help you out with this as well. (Pro Section)

Time Frames [Tip]

Nov 3rd

When using SEOs, SEO Tools, Pagerank Boosters, Backlinking, etc. you must be aware of your time frame. By doing this you can eliminate anticipation and plan your marketing plan accordingly; also you can plot out the times of the month your Marketing Plan Maintenance.

Google bots on average can visit a website 3 times a week to perform indexing. From experience I have seen it take two weeks for the Google Crawler Bot to recognize all of my marketing work and find my backlinks. This information should be reassuring to know. When I first started marketing my first website I thought in a few hours of my SEO work and backlinking I would see results and a higher Pagerank. I got pissed off and upset that I saw no results. About two weeks later I was able to see my work in all of its glory. So keep this time frame in mind. Allow two weeks for your results but also know that in two weeks others other people will be doing there SEO work also, so you need to make sure your work is the best. Every week you should use the Tools section and check your Web Marketing Status and see how your rankings and back links stand. Links may die, websites may remove your links, or the website may push you link to the back of their website; so it is imperative to monitor, maintained, and keep up on your SEO submission and marketing.

Account of all of this as you plan your website and the allotted time you have set aside to run it. Your Marketing is just as important as your web content.

10+ Search Engine Optimization Bots & What You Must Know

August 10th, 2010

A great bot army has descended on the Internet.

Tirelessly performing the bidding of its masters, this ravenous horde is invading our websites, taking our content, clicking on our ads and becoming our friends. Most of the time we dont even know they are there, but they are and at one point or another you need to come to terms with bots.

A bot is an automated software application which typically performs tasks over the Internet. There is virtually an unlimited number of bots performing a dizzying array of tasks. In the world of online marketing, we see bots used to crawl websites, scrape content, check search rankings, automate social media and much more.

In some cases bots are good things offering automation which enables huge advances in access to information (think search engine bots). In other cases bots can be evil by stealing content, breaking websites and costing business owners a ton of money.

To be fair to our fellow netizens, the bots, I want to explore the good and bad side to bot usage. I do not endorse the use of any of the bots listed below and I strongly recommend that if you wish you use any bot that you confirm you are not violating your target websites terms of service, acceptable use policy or any applicable laws. It is always best to have permission before using any bot on a website other than your own.

Twitter Bots

Automatically follow, un-follow, retweet, gather IDs and more.
The Good: Build a following fast and automatically generate content for your tweets (or retweets).
The Bad: If your followers realize theyve followed a bot youre not likely to make many friends. Excessive bot usage can get you banned from Twitter.
Examples: tweet adder, InjekTwit

Website Scrapers
Identify and download specific strings of text or images from a website.
The Good: Save marketing admins countless hours of copy and paste work by scraping website content yourself.
The Bad: Scraping is normally associated with taking other peoples content to use as your own or scraping a website without permission or in violation of the websites TOS or AUP.
Examples: Website Content Extractor, Fetch.com, Automation Anywhere, Mozenda

Website Crawlers / Scrapers Search Engines (indexing software)

Bots sent by search engines to browse and store content from your website. This content is then used to help rank your website on said search engine.
The Good: Search engines exist, and Im guessing you get a good percentage of your traffic from search engines.
The Bad: You have to learn how this little bot works to make sure your site is accessible and easily navigated by the various bots. Think linking structure and indexability.
Examples: 80legs

Search Rank Checkers

Used to check the position of your organic and paid listings on search engines.
The Good: Learn how youre ranking across a variety of search engines, countries, languages and more. When used appropriately with an API you will not have to worry about TOS/AUP violations.
The Bad: When not used appropriately, or without an API, search rank checkers may get your IP banned or worse, your website. Be nice to search engines and try to play by the rules.
Examples: Rank Tracker, Rank Reporter, Web Position Reporter

Facebook Bots

Mass friend requests, messaging, wall posting, poking, status updates and more.
The Good: Build your friend / fan lists quickly and automatically update your status, images and more.
The Bad: Everything else. Automated mass friend requesting is a good way to get your account banned and automated pokes just sounds painful.
Example: Facebook Blaster Pro

Comment Spam Bots

Used to post comment spam on blogs, forums and news websites for the purpose of link building.
The Good: None.
The Bad: Your blog is taken over by comments like I really like your article. You should check out my website about Cialis www.cialisisawesome.com.. Also, if you get caught using a comment spam spot Matt Cutts is likely to ban you from Google and flame you on his blog. Comment spam that blog post in retort.
Examples: No examples provided.

PPC Bots

Click on your competitors ad, influence bounce rates, and generally cause havoc with Adwords accounts.
The Good: None
The Bad: Not only are people who use PPC bots defrauding advertisers, they are also at great risk of being banned by search engines. If you are using a PPC bot, slap yourself on the hand and stand in the corner for 15 minutes.
Examples: No examples provided.

Link Building Bots

Find websites and automatically email webmasters requesting back links.
The Good: Build links automatically.
The Bad: Youll end up annoying countless webmasters who may end up posting negative information about your website. Couple this with the fact that youll be a low rate spammer a hairs breadth away from being banned by most search engines and link building bots are better left alone.
Examples: No examples provided.

Bots offer a powerful way for you to automate repetitive tasks; however, think long and hard about using bots with third party websites or services. As mentioned before, check the terms of service, Acceptable Use Policy and any applicable laws. It is always best to have permission before using a bot on any website other than your own.
