Sizzling At Sphinn: Article Spinning, Search Habits, Search Engine Optimisation Advice & More

November 22nd, 2010

Do you remember the best piece of SEO advice you ever received? Do you think article spinning is spam? And are you up on the latest research about how consumers use search engines? Those were some of the hot topics last week on our sister site, Sphinn, where the community interacts by commenting, tweeting, and liking articles.

But if youre looking for our favorite comment of the week, that came in a story called Article Spinning Spin like a pro. (Dont know what article spinning is? I didnt, either. In a nutshell, its writing an article and then changing out a variety of words to try to make the article unique and then spinning these so-called unique articles across the web to build links.) In that thread, Sphinn member Doc2626 of DocSheldon.com, had the last word (so far) with this comment:

As a copywriter, spinners, whether manual or automatice, make my blood boil! Presenting a slightly massaged re-hash of something already published is underhanded and lazy, as far as Im concerned. If the material is stolen, that just makes it worse.

Agree? Disagree? Speak your piece in the Sphinn thread. And heres a rundown of the other stories that were popular on Sphinn last week.

DOTW: What’s the Best Piece of SEO-related Advice You’ve Ever Received? We all give and get advice: on our blogs, at conferences, on the phone with co-workers and peers, etc. But what’s THE BEST piece of SEO advice anyone’s ever given you? That’s the subject of our “Discussion of the Week” this week.

Article Spinning Spin like a pro To avoid duplicate content links, everyone is spinning their articles these days. Yes, even spammers. Learn how to spin like a pro, so you won’t be mistaken by the search engines for a spammer.

Just Say No to Articles Written for SEO Purposes! Great piece by Jill Whalen, her summary: So banish the notion of “SEO articles” from your vocabulary. Optimize the actual pages of your site that are there to do business, and provide as much additional information as you can that will set your business apart from the others. Get into the head of your potential customers and give them exactly what they need to become informed buyers who want to buy only from you.

Can You Name The Best Seo Advice You Ever Received?

November 18th, 2010

One of the many things I love about the SEO industry is how generous people are with their time. Over the years, I have heard, seen and reported on SEOs giving advice to each other. I am sure this happens in other industries, but I have taken a liking to this one.

That being said, Matt McGee started a thread at Sphinn asking SEOs to share the best SEO advice they ever received. Matt asked:

We all give and get advice: on our blogs, at conferences, on the phone with co-workers and peers, etc. But what’s THE BEST piece of SEO advice anyone’s ever given you? That’s the subject of our “Discussion of the Week” this week.

Now, there has already been some posts with people sharing the best advice they received. But before I do a recap on what people post here, I would love to drive more traffic and discussion to this thread.

Please visit the Sphinn thread and add your story. These stories make up our community, so if you haven’t registered on Sphinn, take the two minutes to do that and share a single story.

Seo Steps To Take After Installing WordPress Theme Templatelite.com

February 26th, 2010

There are a lot of articles on how to optimize WordPress blogs for the search engines. However, I still havent seen any articles outlining actual steps you need to take immediately after you install a fresh copy of WordPress theme. The information below will attempt to do just that.

Step 1: Change the permalink structure

How to do it: Go to Settings>Permalinks and then select Custom Structure. Use /%postname%/ and write it in the box.

Step 2: Install the necessary SEO plugins

Install the following SEO plugins for maximum leverage:

All in one SEO pack necessary for optimizing title tags, meta tags

Redirection Many SEO features here, but the most important one is that it manages 301 redirects. It will also change all 302 to 301 redirects, for example if your site is http://example.com and the visitor goes to http://www.example.com, this plugin will 301 redirect the visitor to the non-www version (by the way, WordPress, without this plugin installed will do the same just with 302 redirect instead.)

Google XML Sitemaps makes the job easier for search engines to find the pages on your site.

Many people recommend many other essential SEO plugins but these are the ones I use on Mix The Net and I really dont plan to add more in the near future.

Step 3: Learn more about SEO from QUALITY resources

Honestly, most SEO advice is very, very bad. It is based on untested theories. Fortunately, there are some websites that use research when doing SEO and base their advice on real life observations.

SEOMoz (http://www.seomoz.org/articles) is one of these rare sites . When you visit them, look right under Most popular guides where youll see free guides on keyword research and on and off-page optimization.

The principles they outline there apply to every website, including your WordPress blog. Learn it and use it.

Okay so thats pretty much all. One more thingif youre grateful for this post then please go and implement everything I wrote above. You wont know the results till you go and implementand believe me, youll be surprised what happens when you do just that.
