Why Most Search Engine Marketing Strategies Fail To Deliver | Weblog Common

June 18th, 2010

There are many reasons why a SEO strategy fails to deliver.

In this article I ponder over 10 primary reasons why your SEO strategy could miss its mark.

1. No long term perspective

Most SEO action plans are defined for a limited period of time like 6 months to a year. Many clients feel post that period there will be no SEO needed, or at max, some maintenance to keep up the rankings. Its this short term thinking that gets website owners caught up in a wrong SEO tactics with little results. The right SEO strategy needs to create value throughout the life time of your online business. Is your SEO plan the right strategy?

2. Shooting in the dark

Most SEO experts dont have a proper strategy in place to secure your rankings. Whats amazing is that the client feels SEO is not something they will understand, and dont feel they need too. This means your SEO tactics could be shooting darts in the dark hoping to hit the bulls eye. Are you aware of the SEO strategies being used on your website and do you understand them?

3. Lack of alignment

Most SEO action plans are not consistent, lack participation and deep perspective into search engines. Many SEO experts build random links (from relevant sites) to your website which eventually does push the rankings, sometimes temporarily. But if you want to build a strong link reputation and earn life time traffic, then proper alignment is a must. Is your SEO plan in alignment with the new link variables consistency, relevancy, diversity, progression, participation and age of links?

4. Playing follow the leader

Most SEO action plans play follow the leader i.e. your competitors. Most clients worry too much about the competitors (and their rankings) and lesser about the value they are creating. A SEO tactic that focuses on chasing competitors is like a dog trying to catch its own tail. Its always seems close, but yet the dog can never catch it. Is your SEO plan chasing its own tail?

5. Wrong expectations

Most SEO action plans make high claims and ranking guarantees. Most clients buy into this. The clients who buy into quick or cheap SEO schemes need to understand the expectations and deliverables properly. If you do not understand your SEO tactic, how it works and why it works, then good luck for the same. Is your SEO strategy based on wrong expectations on either side?

6. Chasing a dream

Most SEO action plans present the dream of tons of traffic that will come to your website. Yes, there is business that will come, but the reality is getting business online is not always easy. It involves creating value, building a brand, communicating that brand, making the brand visible, understanding your target markets and your customer, and a long term vision. And this takes time. Is your SEO plan chasing a dream, or is it grounded in reality following real world business principles?

7. The bigger the better

Most SEO action plans aim to target maximum number of web, user and social communities while link building. And many clients get impressed with the big numbers. What to be kept in mind is that its not possible to participate in so many communities at the same time, and over a period of time. So bigger is not always better! Do you have a SEO plan in place that focuses on value and participation rather than numbers?

8. Forgetting the customer

Most SEO action plans are not focused on the customer. If your potential customers are not getting any value from your SEO strategy then you are on the path to failure. Create value make that value visible leads to conversions. Is your SEO plan creating value for your potential customers?

9. Are all SEO Strategies the same?

All SEO experts follow the same guidelines; however, all SEOs dont have the right SEO strategy in place to get you closer to your online business goals. So take your time to understand the SEO strategy you plan to implement and why you are choosing that SEO plan over others.

10. The wrong SEO strategy

I believe there are no wrong SEO experts, but there are SEO experts with the wrong SEO strategies. So hire the expert SEO with the right SEO strategy today!

How To Create A Powerful Website Positioning Plan In 10 Minutes | Search Engine

March 23rd, 2010

How To Set Proper Goals?

User: OK, I am a SEO specialist and I need to create SEO plan for a new client. The task is

pretty straightforward, but there are so many options! What do I need to do firstly? And what operations don’t matter?

Yes, there are too many options and it can be very hard to set primary goals that will get your SEO project to the top of search results. SEO experts are likely already provided you with recommendations that contradict with each other.

Disregard the SEO stuff. Content is king!

Content doesn’t matter. Page Rank does!

You need more backlinks. We will create them for you. Sign In here for $1500.00

Sounds familiar?

Things don’t need to be so complicated. It’s seems to be evident that you are not the first person who faced this issue and, thus, your SEO plan is not required to be a something the world have never seen.

You need to simply review sites already created by your competitors and perform the same operations they did in the past

Step #1: Investigate the Competition

Let’s say you have a site that sells hats. The users find your site by entering ‘buy hat’ in Google. You know that your goal is to be at the first place in the search results each time the users enter ‘buy hat’ keywords.

What operations do you need to perform to be at the first place? Let’s see how your competitors managed to do this:

Open Google and enter ‘buy hat’.

Open the page that appears at the first position in search results.

Write down the PR of the page you entered.

NOTE: Google Toolbar is required to get information on the PR. If you don’t have Google Toolbar installed, follow the URL: toolbar.google.com.

Get information on the competitors’ backlinks by entering the following query in Google:

“CompetitorSite.com” -site:CompetitorSite.com and write down the value

Does the competitor has keywords in Title?

Does the competitor has keywords in URL?

Step #2: Process The Results

As a result of operations above you should have a list with neat goals. It is clear that in order to be at the first position in the search results you need to

Obtain PR 5.

Get 47,400 links to your site (gosh!).

Create the pages with words ‘buy’ and ‘head’ in title and in the URL.

Follow the recommendations above, get your site to the top and be happy!

PS By the way, our new tool Google SEO Recommendations performs the operations listed above automatically. It also provides you with SEO-recommendations.

Dmitri,

I am pretty upset that you paint the picture like its so easy. Competitor has a PR4 and 47,000 links, therefore all you need is a PR5 and more than 47,000 links?

That is ridiculous. Linking and PR is not a pissing match. It is NOT that simple. And IF it was then everyone would be ranked #1!

I mean this is the type of stuff that gives legitimate SEOs a bad name and quite frankly I am a bit upset and surprised to see this post here as I had a great deal of respect for this blog and its staff. Jeff, you really need better editorial on these guest posts. And all it ended up being was a shameless plug for an SEO tool.

I hate it when people “out” but legitimate SEOs cannot let this type of misinformation to continue to spread in our midst.

Dmitry I understand that you have a product to promote but please do not suggest that rankings are as easy as obtaining more links and higher PR because that is just not true.

2. Focus on the quality of your site. The technical details of search engine optimisation are the things that change most frequently. If you focus your energy on improving the overall usability and interest of your site, no work will be lost.

3. Dont pay too much attention to trends. If you notice a competitor has drastically altered their keyword list, dont be too quick to alter your strategy also. Trends are just that, trends. They can come and go very quickly, leaving you with a lot of work to get back to where you used to be.

5. Read SEO industry information. Keeping tabs on the search engine optimisation industry is one of the best ways to keep up with search engine changes. One of the great things about the educational tendencies of the SEO industry is that a consensus is usually visible on any changes. Paying attention to just one expert can let you know about trends.
