Search Engine Marketing Tips For Bing

November 22nd, 2010

Whether you’re a site owner attempting to rank higher in search results, or a Web developer or designer working with a marketing team on a cool new project, it’s more important than ever to understand how Microsoft’s Bing works. So advises John Pring in aSix Revisions post.

Why is a new focus on Bing important? Because now that Bing powers Yahoo Search, too, itaccounts for almost 30% of the search market (according to Nielsen), Pring explains. It’s time to acknowledge Bing as a player in your SEO efforts.

To get started, Pring advises using the “handy little tool” Bingle to review results for certain terms, side by side, in different search engines. In the process, you’ll likely notice differences between Bing and Google.

According to Pring, here are some key ways Bing is different:

Backlinks are Less Important in Bing. The top ten search-engine results in Bing have fewer backlinksthe links pointing to a Web pagethan in Google.

PageRank Matters Less in Bing. Google’s algorithm for PageRankthe number that shows a Web page’s strength in search-engine resultsdoes not apply so much to Microsoft’s Bing. For competitive phrases, PageRank2 (or even PR1) sites regularly appear in Bing’s top ten results, he notes.

Fresh Content Matters Less in Bing. Fresh content is a less relevant factor in Bing because Bing’s indexing is likely not as fast as Google’s “Caffeine” update.

Pring recommends using these resources toBing-optimize your site:

The IIS SEO Toolkit. Microsoft’s Internet Information Services SEO Toolkit includes site analysis, robots.txt exclusion, sitemaps, and site index functionsall of which can improve your site’s Bing ranking.

The Bing Keyword Tool. WordStream has released a Bing-centered keyword tool that helps you uncover new and different keywords.

The Po!nt: Optimizing for Bing might be easier than you think. Good copy, appropriate keyword density, good PageRank, and lots of quality inbound links that already rank well in Google will almost certainly rankwell in Bing.
